Kountry Cabinets: Past & Present

Pletcher Furniture in Nappanee opened its doors in September of 1933, selling five-piece living room suites for $39.95. The furniture store was adjacent to a home on the residential block of West Market Street, and in 1957, the Pletcher family purchased the home and built a furniture store that surrounded the home. This made the home part of the inside of the store and is the only retail building of its kind in the area.

It was the first commercial building built to contiguous to downtown Nappanee after World War II. The building was greatly expanded in 1962; the belfry from the old Locke school was added to the home in 1966 and a second showroom was added in 1987.

Over time, the store went through other changes of ownership and design, and in 2011, it was purchased by Ola Yoder of Kountry Wood to be used as a retail location for selling cabinetry manufactured by Kountry Wood, thus the initial name of the store was Kountry Cabinets. It later became Kountry Cabinets & Home Furnishings when furniture and home décor were added to the offerings. A major remodel project was done to the structure giving it the look that it has today. The belfry and the house inside the store are still part of the location to this day and are a part of who we are.
